CrystalDiskMark (often referred to as DiskMark) is the PC industry standard for benchmarking storage drives. If your computer feels sluggish, file transfers are crawling, or your operating system is stuttering, your Solid State Drive (SSD) might be performing below its advertised speeds.
Running a benchmark isolates whether your hardware is failing, bottlenecked, or simply experiencing normal cache depletion. โ๏ธ How to Download and Setup CrystalDiskMark
Download the Official Tool: Visit the official CrystalMark Download Page. Avoid copycat sites. Download the Standard Edition.
Choose ZIP vs. Installer: Select the “ZIP” version if you want a portable application that runs without a formal Windows installation.
Launch the Correct Executable: Unzip the folder and open DiskMark64.exe (for standard 64-bit Windows systems). ๐งช Step-by-Step: Running Your First Test
Before clicking start, configuring the settings at the top row of the application window ensures accurate data without artificially skewing the test.
Test Passes (Dropdown 1): Set this to 5 (default) for maximum accuracy, or drop it to 1 if you want a rapid test.
Test Size (Dropdown 2): Set this to 1GiB. Larger test sizes (like 16GiB or 32GiB) stress the drive more accurately but take much longer. Ensure you have at least 10% to 15% free space on your target drive.
Target Drive (Dropdown 3): Select the exact drive letter (e.g., C:, D:) you intend to benchmark.
Drive Profile Optimization: If you are testing a modern M.2 NVMe drive, go to the top menu bar, click Settings, and select NVMe SSD to tailor the queue depths to your hardware. For older SATA drives, leave it on default.
Run: Click the green “All” button on the left to begin the sequence. Let your system sit completely idle for a couple of minutes while it finishes. ๐ Reading the Results: What Do the Numbers Mean?
